SOL Testing Schedule  Welcome our New Sleepy Hollow Family Liason 

My name is Indira Mendez Flores.  I graduated as a teacher in my country in El Salvador in 1997. I studied at NOVA Community College in 2005 earning a Childrens Development Assistance certificate. Before working at FCPS as a parent liason, I worked as a Spanish teacher at Minnieland Day Care and prior to that I was a school bus driver with Prince WIlliams County for 17 years. In my free time, I love to spend time with my 3 adult children, 4 grandchildren and my cat, Rafi. 

I will be at Sleepy Hollow on Tuesdays and Thursdays till the end of this school year and then begin full time in August 2024.

Registration for FCPS Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts (IFTA/E-IFTA) camps closes on Friday, June 7.   • Battle of the Books Results - this was an amazing event!  9 teams competed to show their knowledge of 11 selected books; they deciphered clues, figured out puzzles, and worked together as a team – and had a great time! Congratulations  to our 5th grade winners and our two 4th grade runners up!

Your child’s current classroom teacher, specialists, counselors, and administrators will collaborate to make well-balanced classes. We value and consider your insight into your child’s learning needs. Please note that this system is not intended for families to request specific teachers. 

⏰ Share Your Thoughts on Middle School Start Times

Attend a forum to hear about adolescent sleep research from an expert, learn about FCPS’ ongoing middle school start times study, and participate in small group discussions. All forums will deliver the same presentation and provide the same feedback opportunities. Breakout sessions will be held for middle school students to share their voices. Students are encouraged to attend!

Dear Sleepy Hollow Families,

It is with mixed emotions that I announce Mr. Tim Scesney leaving the Sleepy Hollow community. As you know, Mr. Scesney has been the steadfast leader of our school helping in making a smooth transition of my principalship. He will be begin his next assignment at Freedom Hill Elementary School as their new Assistant Principal effective July 9th, 2024. Mr. Scesney's impact to our school community has been significant. We wish him the best of luck in his new position but will always be part of our pod at Sleepy Hollow. 

I will be working with the region to select a new assistant principal who will be announced before the end of the school year. I look forward to receiving feedback, suggestions and input from you as your involvement is important to me.

SOL Testing Schedule  SEL Screener Results

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. 

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Nominate Someone Today for the Bussey Memorial   Equity Award

Do you know of an outstanding person or group that has worked for equity in an FCPS school? There’s still time to nominate a candidate for the 2024 Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award.

This award recognizes staff, students, or community members who have demonstrated significant and impactful efforts to improve the educational experiences and outcomes of students from groups who are marginalized or underserved.

Dear Sleepy Hollow Families,

I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the start of a warm spring week ahead. I wanted to take a moment to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our incredible PTA for yet another fantastic event this past Friday.

The movie night was a resounding success, and it was truly heartwarming to witness families coming together to share in the joy of cinema and delicious popcorn. Your support and participation are what make these events so special, and we are immensely grateful for your enthusiasm and dedication.

Family Summit

Safe, Supported, Inclusive 

FCPS Family Summit 2024

The FCPS Family Summit will take place on Saturday, April 20, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Marshall High School. The conference will cover topics that are helpful for all families, such as social-emotional resources, along with a specially curated online component to provide supports for students with disabilities and their families. 

Some of the topics include raising resilient, independent children; forming meaningful connections with children; addressing big emotions; and the dangers of opioids and fentanyl. The conference is being planned by several FCPS offices in collaboration with the Fairfax Alliance of Black School Educators, Black Women’s Educational Alliance - DC Chapter, Hispanic Educators Association, and Asian Educators Association. 

This year’s theme is Safe, Supported, and Included, which aligns with Goal 2 of the FCPS Strategic Plan. More details will be available after spring break.

Dear Sleepy Hollow Families,

 

☀️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8th

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon and one that requires important safety reminders.

Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. At Sleepy Hollow Elementary School, we have been able to collect approved eyewear so that students can safely view the eclipse ONLY while wearing the glasses. This was a generous gift from the PTA and we are appreciative of their collaboration on this extraordinary event.

All students will be provided with a pair of ISO 12312-2 approved glasses at dismissal. Teachers will reinforce to students the importance of wearing the glasses.

Here are some important reminders:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce it at home. 
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. We will be providing eyewear that has been approved for viewing.

FRYING PAN PARK SCHOOL FIELD TRIP!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are excited to announce an upcoming educational field trip to a local farm! This trip will be an enriching opportunity for all our students to connect with nature, learn about agriculture, and gain hands-on experience in a real-life farm setting.

  2. Attire: We recommend dressing your child in comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes. Since we'll be outdoors for much of the day, hats, sunscreen, and reusable water bottles are also encouraged.

  3. Lunch and Snacks: Students will be provided a school bagged lunch and a healthy snack.
  4. Chaperones -  Every classroom is able to bring two adult chaperones on the school bus. Additional parents may attend the field trip and meet your student's class at the farm.

Investing in excellence means putting our dollars where it matters most — schools and instruction. Nearly 93% of FCPS full-time staff work directly in our schools. And nearly 86% of FCPS’ Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Advertised Budget is dedicated to instructional programs across all grade levels, including special education.

📖 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

Attend a virtual information night to learn about Lexia on Tuesday, April 9, at 6:30 p.m. Participants will discover how FCPS is integrating this program into the classroom to support student literacy growth. Tips for supporting students at home will also be shared. Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

AAP Newsletter

Families, please find attached the Advanced Academics Program (AAP) Spring Newsletter, with information about screening for Subject Specific (Level II), Part-Time (Level III), and Full-Time (Level IV) Services as well as an overview of the continuum of Advanced Academic services in FCPS. If you have any questions, please reach out to Tracy Haynes, Advanced Academic Resource Teacher.

 

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.

Screening for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

Students can be screened for subject specific and part time AAP services at any time in the school year. In the spring, schools review data on all students to determine services for the start of the next school year.

Screening Process for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

Multiple criteria are reviewed holistically to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. Committees consider student work from opportunities with AAP lessons, examples of student reasoning or gifted behaviors from class discussions and activities, progress reports, achievement and ability scores, and parent or guardian input. Committees consider whether students have access to a group of students with similar academic needs to support academic conversations and growth in the classroom.

Appeals Process for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

If a parent or guardian wishes to appeal an ineligible decision, they may submit an appeal with new data for consideration by the local school screening committee. This new information should be submitted to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Mrs. Haynes.

Subject Specific and Part-Time Services in Elementary School

FCPS offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. The continuum of services approach allows for a focus on matching services to students’ needs rather than labeling students. Students have:

• Multiple entry points for deeper learning opportunities in specific areas of need as they develop.

• A cluster group of students with similar academic needs to support student learning and growth. Teachers, administrators, and Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services at the elementary level:

 

Access to Rigor, Grades K-6 (Level I)

All students have opportunities to think critically, reason, and problem-solve.

  • All teachers use critical and creative thinking strategies in their lessons
  • Classroom teachers provide opportunities using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework a minimum of once per quarter.

Because Access to Rigor services are for all FCPS students, there is not a screening process.

 

Subject Specific Advanced Differentiation, Grades K-6 (Level II)

Some students require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in at least one specific subject area. Classroom teachers may adjust instruction for students in these areas by:

  • Providing different assignments and resources in those subjects,
  • Grouping students by their strengths, interests, and readiness, and
  • Providing additional challenges using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework.

Student needs for subject specific differentiation are re-evaluated each year at the local school.

 

Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III)

Some students have advanced academic abilities in multiple subject areas and require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in multiple content areas.

  • Students work with other students that have similar academic needs through weekly pull-out classes or weekly co-taught lessons with the AART and classroom teacher.
  • Teachers provide frequent opportunities to use materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, science, social studies, and/or mathematics.

Part-time services continue through Grade 6. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

Screening for Full-Time (Level IV) Services

Screening for full-time (level IV) AAP services happens at the district/central level rather than by local schools. For your planning for next school year, please know that screening for full-time (level IV) services occurs during two specific screening cycles:

  • Fall screening is available for students who are new to FCPS since January. ο Fall referrals are due October 15, annually.
  • Spring screening is available for any Grade 2-7 FCPS-enrolled student. ο The referral window is from the first day of school - December 15, annually.

Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-8 (Level IV)

Some advanced learners need a full-time advanced academic program with differentiated instruction in all four core content areas (Language Arts, mathematics, social studies, and science). 

Students eligible for full-time AAP services are cluster grouped on a full-time basis and receive:

  • Full-time use of materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, and
  • Curriculum that is differentiated through acceleration, depth, and complexity of content. Full-time services continue through Grade 8. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

Dear Sleepy Hollow Families,

As we approach the much-anticipated Spring Break, we wanted to take a moment to inform you of some important dates and reminders.

Spring Break will commence on Monday, March 25th, providing our students with a well-deserved opportunity to rest, recharge, and spend quality time with family and friends. During this time, there will be no classes or school-related activities taking place. Students will return to school on Wednesday, April 3rd, 2024. We encourage you to ensure your child is prepared to resume their studies promptly on this date.

Upon their return, we will continue to uphold high expectations for our students both socially and academically. We encourage them to come back to school ready to learn every day, as we have exciting and engaging activities planned for the remainder of the academic year.

Principal Evaluation Questionnaire

Sleepy Hollow parents/guardians should have received  an email containing a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program for principals and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include how the principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within the school.

The questionnaire will be available until April 5. Please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your feedback is important to me.

Can My Child Go to School?

🤧 Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended. 

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved. 

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities. Please review the attached link about whether your student can go to school.  If your student has a fever (temperature of 100.4 or higher), vomiting or diarrhea, we ask that they stay home for 24 hours once symptoms have stopped without the use of medications. This helps to limit the transmission of illness from student to student and keep our school healthier.

The survey is open Sunday, March 3 - Friday, March 22. Parents/caregivers should have received an email invitation with a unique survey link from K12 Insight on March 3. The subject line was: FCPS Family Engagement Survey.

You may already know that our library has over 700 books in Spanish as well as additional books in Vietnamese and other languages.  Did you know that all FCPS students have access to free online options for books in English plus several different world languages?  Tumblebooks has books read aloud in Spanish, French, and Arabic; MyOn also has read-alouds in Spanish.  And our online ebook reader, MackinVIA, has over 1,000 books that can be read online, with approximately 50 each in Spanish and in French.  Need help reaching any of these free resources?  Reach out to our librarian at [email protected].  Happy reading!

☀️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8 

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.  

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. Exciting New Program for Next Year: Early Childhood Special Education Program

Dear Sleepy Hollow Families,

We are thrilled to announce the introduction of a new program at Sleepy Hollow for the upcoming academic year: the Early Childhood Special Education Program. This program will cater to the needs of our three and four-year-old students and will provide invaluable support in their early developmental stages. The Early Childhood Class-based services will offer tailored instruction within a classroom setting, emphasizing crucial areas such as communication, early literacy, social development, and other skills outlined in each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). We are committed to fostering a nurturing and inclusive environment where every child can thrive and reach their full potential. I am fortunate to announce that we have selected two early childhood special education teachers for the position of a.m. and p.m. teachers.

FLES Language Change Discussion: During our recent PTA meeting, I had the opportunity to hear from families regarding the FLES Language change. Exciting Partnership with Congressional School: We are thrilled to announce a partnership with Congressional School for the upcoming academic year. Together, we will co-host the National Celebration of Reading, marking the beginning of numerous collaborative opportunities to serve all students in our community. We look forward to the positive impact this partnership will bring.

Equitable Access to Literacy: Last week, principals had the opportunity to preview the new literacy curriculum that will be implemented in Fall 2024. The curriculum, provided by Benchmark, offers a comprehensive overview of K-6 literacy education. We are excited about the possibilities this curriculum holds for enhancing literacy skills and ensuring equitable access to quality education for all students.

🧸 Kindergarten Registration: It’s as Easy as 1-2-3…

There’s an easy five-step process for parents wanting to register their child for kindergarten:

  1. Determine eligibility. 
  2. Identify your local school. 
  3. Gather documents. 
  4. Fill out forms. 
  5. Schedule an appointment.

After the appointment at the school (the student and one caregiver must be present), the student will be ready for orientation, Bridge to Kindergarten, or any other introductory events each school may host. Read more about the registration process.

Immunization Clinics

🩹 Measles Is Preventable

Measles is making headlines as the number of cases nationwide has topped 40, with three confirmed cases in people living in or traveling through the National Capital Region. 

The good news is that measles is preventable through vaccination! Vaccines help teach the immune system how to defend against germs, helping to build up natural defenses. Give your child the best protection against measles with two doses of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website to find out more about measles.

Extended Hours at Immunization Clinics

To help parents/caregivers obtain vaccinations for their children, the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) will offer immunization clinics with extended hours:

Parents/caregivers should make an appointment but a limited number of walk-ins will be accepted. Please call 703-246-7100 to schedule an appointment.

Have you heard the terms “windows” and “mirrors” for books?  A mirror book is one that reflects the reader’s own experiences, which can be reassuring and validating; a window book gives the reader a glimpse into experiences different from their own and builds empathy and understanding of others.  Both are valuable to the reader!  The stories in our library’s books reflect a wide variety of settings, characters, and events so that ALL readers can find both windows and mirrors.  Reading widely brings so many benefits!  Please reach out to our librarian, Mrs. Oswalt, if you want insights into our school's book collection – yay reading!

#InvestInExcellence ✨ The average amount of funds transferred from Fairfax County to FCPS was 52.6% of county disbursements from Fiscal Years 2019-2023. It dipped to 51.6% in 2024. The county’s budget proposal for next year would transfer 51.4% of total disbursements. If the county returns to 52.6% for the upcoming year, that would be $63 million more as an investment in excellence for our schools.

Dear Sleepy Hollow Family,

We are thrilled to share with you the resounding success of our recent PTA Sponsored  International Night event! It was an evening filled with vibrant student performances, exquisite food, and an abundance of joy for everyone involved.

The student performances showcased the diverse talents of our student body, with each act bringing its own unique flair to the stage. From traditional dances to musical performances, the energy and enthusiasm were palpable throughout the night.

Of course, no International Night would be complete without delicious food from around the world. Our culinary chefs and gracious local restaurants outdid themselves with a selection of dishes that tantalized the taste buds and transported us to far-off lands with every bite.

We are also excited to announce that our Student Council are organizing a food drive. We are already overwhelmed by the generosity of our community. Thanks to your donations, we have already filled many boxes with essential items that will support those in need.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to making International Night such a memorable and successful event. It truly exemplifies the spirit of our school community coming together to celebrate diversity and unity.

Opioid Conversation

🎤 Join a Community Conversation on

Fentanyl and Other Drugs

A community conversation addressing the opioid crisis within Northern Virginia and Fairfax County Public Schools will be held Wednesday, March 18, 6:30-8 p.m., in the auditorium at Lake Braddock Secondary School. Please enter through Door #14. 

All attendees will receive a free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.   

This discussion will provide families, staff, and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. The material discussed is suitable for students in grades 6-12. Together as a community, we aim to explore collaborative strategies to minimize the impact of these harmful and too-often fatal substances.

Language interpretation services are available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed. Learn more about the event and register online. 

Do You Know Where FCPS Funding Comes From?

The majority of FCPS funding is requested from the Fairfax County government, which generates its revenue from real estate and personal property taxes. The Commonwealth of Virginia provides the next largest source of revenue to FCPS through state aid and sales tax. The rest of the funding comes from a variety of sources, including federal aid and tuition for non-county residents. (The numbers above represent the FY 2025 proposed school operating fund in millions.)

🎉 Leap Into Learning: Celebrating the Last Week of February! 🐸

Dear Sleepy Hollow Parents,

As we leap into the final week of February, we're excited to celebrate this special time, made even more extraordinary by the occurrence of Leap Year! This additional day gives us an extra opportunity to reflect on the amazing progress and achievements of our students.

Fifth Grade Elective Selections This week, our fifth graders embarked on an important milestone in their academic journey by meeting with Glasgow counselors to select their course electives for the upcoming school year. It's an exciting time as they begin to explore new interests and envision their path to middle school. We're confident that they will make thoughtful choices that will empower them to excel and thrive in the years ahead.

Kindergarten Narratives In kindergarten, our young learners have been busy polishing their personal narratives. Through storytelling, they are learning to give voice and rich details to important moments in their lives. It's inspiring to see their creativity and imagination come to life as they develop their writing skills. These early experiences lay the foundation for future literacy success.

Embracing Next Steps Across all grade levels, students are embracing the next steps in their academic journey with enthusiasm and determination. Whether it's mastering new concepts in math, conducting experiments in science, or expressing themselves through art and music, our students are eager to learn and grow. We're incredibly proud of their resilience, curiosity, and dedication to success.

Parent-Teacher Collaboration As partners in your child's education, we encourage you to continue fostering a supportive learning environment at home. Library News

Our library's Battle of the Books teams are doing a great job reading the 11 selected books!  We have 49 4th and 5th grade students participating - our highest number ever!  At meetings, the teams practice different challenge formats (word scramble, logic puzzle, cypher, etc.) that they'll see in the event this spring; they're also practicing communication and problem-solving skills along with enjoyment of reading.  Hooray for books!

♥ Kindness, Gratitude, and Perseverance ♥

Virginia Kindness Week

Last week, our students demonstrated kindness, gratitude and perseverance. We enjoyed tokens of sweetness from students and staff. Ms. Lobo checked in on classrooms for students earning prizes by showing kindness and our multilingual students continue to showcase their talents in reading, writing, listening and speaking English through the WIDA assessments. Our learners have an opportunity to demonstrate their learning through these four domains over the course of January to March. We are appreciative of our ESOL teachers who plan, organize, and administer over 1,000 assessments! Thank you!

At the last board meeting, Dr. Reid presented a proposed FCPS budget for the 2024-25 school year. Highlights include:

Celebrating 100 Days of Learning: February 9th  marked a significant milestone in our academic calendar – the 100th day of school! We want to extend our heartfelt congratulations to all our students for their hard work, dedication, and perseverance over the past several months. From those first tentative steps into the classroom to the confident strides they're making now, we're incredibly proud of each and every one of them. Throughout the day, our teachers prepared special activities and lessons to celebrate this momentous occasion, reinforcing the importance of every day in the journey of learning.

Full Day of Planning for Teachers: In our commitment to delivering the best possible education for our students, all classroom teachers collaborated as a grade level and received a full day of planning for the third quarter. This dedicated time allows our educators to reflect on their teaching practices, collaborate with colleagues, and design engaging lessons tailored to the needs and interests of our students. We're grateful for their unwavering dedication and the effort they put into continuously improving their craft to benefit our school community.

Spring is on the Horizon: As we reach the midpoint of the academic year, we can't help but feel a sense of anticipation for the season ahead. With spring just around the corner, we're excited for the opportunities it brings for outdoor activities, exploration, and renewed energy. ♥ Kindness Week Opportunities ♥

Virginia Kindness Week begins on February 12th. The purpose is to recognize that simple day-to-day acts of kindness enable our schools, communities, and state to be a kinder, safer, healthier, and more inclusive place to live, work, learn, and play. At Sleepy Hollow, we will celebrate kindness to one another from February 12th - February 20th. 

To encourage kindness within the school for, we will have a Kindness Opportunities Board for EVERYONE to complete. The rules are simple. Students participating will come up with seven acts of kindness they plan to complete during the week and record them on their board daily. We have included in this newsletter, a Kindness Board Ideas (English and Spanish) for families to support their child in selecting acts of kindness. Once a student has completed ALL seven acts of kindness, they will receive a prize. Students can come in the morning to the office to choose their prize. 📚 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools to use as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support, and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.Attend an information night on Monday, February 12, at 6:30 p.m., at Thoreau Middle School. Parents/caregivers will learn more about Lexia, and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom and supporting student growth in reading. Attendees will also get tips for supporting their students at home.

Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

Magnet Schools

Learn About Science, Technology, and Arts Magnet Schools

Three FCPS elementary magnet schools provide programs that enhance learning in science, technology, and performing arts. 

If you are interested in sending your student to an elementary magnet school program, consider attending a school-based information night at Hunters Woods Elementary School, Bailey’s Primary Elementary School, or Bailey’s Upper Elementary School. 

Information nights will provide an opportunity to learn about individual school programs, student eligibility, the lottery process, and transportation.

Registration for the 2024-25 elementary magnet lottery is open Tuesday, March 5, through Friday, April 12. Get more information about the schools, their programs, and locations.

Tutor.com Teacher-Referred Tutoring

Through Schoology®, all FCPS students have 24/7 access to no-cost, year-round, on-demand, 1-to-1 tutoring services through Tutor.com.

A new Teacher-Referred Tutoring program feature provides targeted support and extends student learning. Teachers can now refer students for tutoring, with their specific needs already identified. Students can get extra support — on their own schedule — and reinforce their in-class learning.

Caregivers can guide students to access expert tutoring, homework help, and writing support by clicking on the Tutor.com icon in their Schoology portal—anytime, anywhere.

Plus, look for teachers’ tutoring session referrals on the Tutor.com homepage.

Dear Sleepy Hollow Families, 

We hope you had a great weekend! We are coming off of an exciting week at Sleepy Hollow. Our students in various grade levels learned about Groundhogs Day including some 4th graders met and virtually interviewed Punxsutawney Phil. We completed our required safety drill of a Lockdown Drill. Some classrooms made beautifully decorated cards for Valentine's for Vets. Lastly, we ended the week with Wacky Hair Day on Friday and the highlight for many students was duct tape your Principal and Assistant Principal to the wall!  Thank you PTA for donating the numerous rolls of duct tape.

LIBRARY NEWS

It's almost time for the SHES book fair!  The biggest change for this year is that students will visit the fair and make their purchase on the day of their visit.  If you want your child to make a purchase, they should bring money on the day their classroom makes their visit to the fair.  Book sales begin this Friday February 9th.  The Bookworm Central flyer will be sent home in the Wednesday folder with additional details including the schedule of which day each class will attend the book fair.  If you would like the opportunity to select a book with your child, join us on Tuesday February 13th  from 3:30 -  6:30 pm.  Questions?  Interested in helping at the fair?  Please reach out to our librarian at [email protected].  Thanks for your support of our book fair!

Superintendent to Present FY 2025 Proposed Budget

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid will present the Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Proposed Budget at the School Board meeting on Thursday, February 8, at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Reid’s presentation, as well as other budget documents, will be available after she presents to the board.

February 5th - 9th is National School Counseling Week, and highlights the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve academic success and planning for a career. Dear Sleepy Hollow Families, 

What a difference a week makes--it's hard to believe we had inches of snow this time last week and today it feels like springtime!

We have made it to the end of the 2nd quarter and halfway through the 2023-2024 school year! We are excited to see all our students back on Monday for the beginning of the 3rd quarter. We hope that everyone enjoys the weekend!

Our Bookworm Central book fair is coming up soon!  It will be held in the library the week of February 12-16!  We’ll have a late night for sales on Tuesday 2/13 from dismissal until 6:30 p.m.  Please reach out to our librarian at [email protected] if you'd like to be one of the first to open the boxes and see the amazing new books as we set up on Friday February 9.  No experience necessary!  We also welcome parent assistance through the week when students visit the fair, plus packing up the fair on Friday 2/16.  We can't wait for this fun school event - see you there and happy reading!
